Dead Legs

After my epic bike trip on Sunday (where "epic" = about 8 miles), I woke up this morning BEFORE my 5:45 alarm and sprang out of bed super, excited to hop on my bike again.  I had a whole route planned, clothes laid out, etc.  It is absolutely gorgeous out today -- feels like a mid-September day, but with more green.  Right now I'm sitting on my patio writing this, and it is probably 62 degrees, sunny, and not a cloud in the perfect blue sky.  If you know me in real life or have been reading this blog for a while, you know this is my kinda weather.  I don't like the heat, can't stand humidity, but also get super bummed out by the gloom and doom of winter and sometimes spring!  I love to be active, but the heat makes me want to stay in the A/C and watch TV, while a lack of sun makes me want to eat brownies and hide under the covers and cry a lot. 

Clearly I live in the wrong state.

I digress.


I skipped out of the house this morning and hopped on my bike, only to go approximately 2 feet before realizing how truly "saddle sore" I was from my ride on Sunday -- I probably could have biked through the dead legs to loosen them up (still a bit sore from my last intense ride), but holy cow, the pressure on my, um, nether-regions was so intense I nearly cried.

Yes, I have a gel seat.
Yes, I have padded bike pants.


I bought the bike late in the season last year, so probably only really had the opportunity to use it 3-4 times before storing it away for winter.  I remember a bit of soreness, but maybe I had more lag time between rides to recover.  At any rate, I biked for maybe -- MAYBE -- 10 minutes this morning, and then turned around and came home.  I went for a bit of a walk instead, but it definitely wasn't the same.

I am so disappointed.  I was already looking forward to the post-ride coffee, the long hot shower, the post-workout glow, and the exercise-induced "sleep like the dead" that would hit around 10 PM tonight.

Any tips from you bikers out there?  Do I just need to give myself a few more days to recover?  Advil?  Ice?  Anything?  Bueller?

Jess - LOTS of stretching. Beneath those bruised cheeks are some knotted up muscles. The more you ride the better it gets...and easier on your bum ;). Oh and be careful on bumps for awhile...stand up...or you will quickly be reminded of your pain ;).

Let me know if you ever want a biking buddy!

Not a biker myself, but can feel your pain. For the past few weeks, I've been really good at taking the kiddos out for a walk...but with a busy weekend, mixed in with weather and work, I haven't been out for a day or two. My legs are aching to walk...hopefully tonight before bedtime I can take the little ones for a stroll. Keep up the great work, Jess!

Hi Jess! I feel your pain - literally! I've gone through this oh so many times. Give it a few days, and then ride again. The key is consistently riding as soon as you can tolerate it. You have to build up a resistance to the pain over time. Eventually, you won't even notice it, and will be able to hop on your bike any time that you want. Good luck!! :)

Back in the day when I was riding my bike 10 miles several times a week, I learned that (especially in the beginning) it's definitely necessary to take a day or two off between rides. After I'd been doing it for a couple months I was able to do 2 or 3 days in a row, but mostly I did every other day to give my tush a break from the seat!

I got a really wide seat on a commuter bike, and I didn't have "that" problem. Last bike I owned, that was enough to put me off of it. I felt like I'd been caned.
