Morning sky...
...any questions?
90 minute walk; hot coffee in hand, cool breeze in hair, great music on iPod, random thoughts in my mind, smile on my face, good mornings and head nods throughout the 'hood.

Dead Legs
After my epic bike trip on Sunday (where "epic" = about 8 miles), I woke up this morning BEFORE my 5:45 alarm and sprang out of bed super, excited to hop on my bike again. I had a whole route planned, clothes laid out, etc. It is absolutely gorgeous out today -- feels like a mid-September day, but with more green. Right now I'm sitting on my patio writing this, and it is probably 62 degrees, sunny, and not a cloud in the perfect blue sky. If you know me in real life or have been reading this blog for a while, you know this is my kinda weather. I don't like the heat, can't stand humidity, but also get super bummed out by the gloom and doom of winter and sometimes spring! I love to be active, but the heat makes me want to stay in the A/C and watch TV, while a lack of sun makes me want to eat brownies and hide under the covers and cry a lot.
Clearly I live in the wrong state.
I digress.
I skipped out of the house this morning and hopped on my bike, only to go approximately 2 feet before realizing how truly "saddle sore" I was from my ride on Sunday -- I probably could have biked through the dead legs to loosen them up (still a bit sore from my last intense ride), but holy cow, the pressure on my, um, nether-regions was so intense I nearly cried.
Yes, I have a gel seat.
Yes, I have padded bike pants.
I bought the bike late in the season last year, so probably only really had the opportunity to use it 3-4 times before storing it away for winter. I remember a bit of soreness, but maybe I had more lag time between rides to recover. At any rate, I biked for maybe -- MAYBE -- 10 minutes this morning, and then turned around and came home. I went for a bit of a walk instead, but it definitely wasn't the same.
I am so disappointed. I was already looking forward to the post-ride coffee, the long hot shower, the post-workout glow, and the exercise-induced "sleep like the dead" that would hit around 10 PM tonight.
Any tips from you bikers out there? Do I just need to give myself a few more days to recover? Advil? Ice? Anything? Bueller?

And The Bugs In My Teeth To Prove It
588 Calories Burned
1 Hr 8 minutes (8 of those minutes were spent ogling the amazingly beautiful scenery, and listening to the jazz combo playing at the restaurant adjacent to the falls)
Max HR: 152
Min HR: 103 (while standing around, gawking)
Theme of the ride: "Don't Stop Believing," (Glee cast version)
Thanks to my Mom and my friend Amy, both who went on bike rides today, which inspired me to do the same.
I can't believe it took me this long to get out there this season, but I can't wait to do it again. For the past two years, the creek has been low and the falls were merely a trickle - it was wonderful to see things so green and healthy tonight. Perfect way to end a perfect weekend.

Foodie Friday
Farmer's Market after work. Ten bucks. Pretty sure my week will consist of gazpacho and lots of cucumber salad and green beans!

A Very Good Place To Start
After my OCD-induced night of garage cleaning, cooking, and laundry, I was pretty amazed to wake up at 6 AM and pop right out of bed -- no hitting the snooze button, no dawdling... I got right in the shower while the coffee brewed, drank my smoothie, got cute enough, and was at work by 8:30. I basically walked right into back to back meetings, and then at 11:15, a little reminder popped up on my calender.
Weight Watchers.
Ugh, I'd scaled hopped last week and it was UGLY -- and then I did it again this morning, and it was a little better, but not great. I really DID NOT want to go face the music -- but I also knew that it was the right thing to do. After 3 weeks in a row of commitments that prevented meeting attendence, it was time to slay the dragon.
And so I did.
Up 2.4 lbs. Disappointing, frustrating, but frankly, a lot better than I was expecting. I'm still down about 2.4 lbs since rejoining meetings, so things could be worse. :-) I had sort of a light bulb moment while deliberating whether to go, and then whether or not to stay --
Skipping the weigh in wasn't going to get me anything, or get me anywhere. I've already spent the money. I've already eaten the food. I've already made all the choices, and now it was time to make amends.
So I went, and I stayed - and actually, there were a few people there who were rejoining, struggle with the same things. The conversation was all about how and when and where to start.
The answer?
You gotta start somewhere, and you gotta start HERE.
HERE = right where you are at this moment. Not 2 years ago, not 20 lbs ago, and not 5 lbs less than now. Not at the finish or starting line of the marathon, and not "sometime, when the stress dies down."
You have to start exactly who and where you are at this given moment. Wherever you are right now is the beginning.
A very good place to start.
And PS? The stress? It isn't going to die down. This is LIFE.
So I came, and I saw, and I listened and learned and left feeling in control of my choices and my life.
By the time the end of the day rolled around, I knew I needed some exercise. I also knew that if I drove home first, I'd miss my window because it would rain -- luckily i keep workout clothes and shoes at my desk. So I decided to put my best foot forward and hit the pavement - about an hour walk from downtown to Loring Park, a beautiful "Central Park'esque" place in Minneapolis, with gardens and sculptures and fountains (oh my!). It was the first conscious workout in several days, and it felt great.
Best part?
I came home ready to do it all over again.
Dinner has been eaten.
Dishes are done.
Food for tomorrow is planned and prepped, and laundry is spinning away.
I'm relaxing with some water and the remote control, and pretty ready to take a bubble bath and hit the hay early.

Just Keep Swimming
I don't have time for much of a post right now, but wanted to share some fun / interesting pics quick before I hit the hay -- I'm still knee deep in work and home repairs. I worked from home yesterday so the electrician could be here to work on the garage door -- he didn't finish, and I didn't get enough work done (too many distractions). So tonight I worked until 7 PM, then came home and got to work at home -- cleaning and organizing my garage, and prepping lots of food for the remainder of the week.
I'm in one of those "use everything you have before you buy more" phases in the kitchen -- I had to stop and pick up a few things today (chicken breasts, milk, frozen fruit for smoothies), but I think that will be all I need to get me through the weekend and most of next week! Once I was done working in the garage, I went immediately to work in the kitchen, prepping and preparing food. I have quinoa chicken salad for the next few lunches, a home made roasted red pepper dip with veggies... and a meal plan and prepped dinners for the next couple of days.
I've been a huge slacker when it comes to getting to the gym, but did have a fabulous walk last week with a co-worker, did 3 hours of gardening / yard work on Sunday, and today probably burned 1000 calories in house work and cooking -- note to self: THIS is how I got so skinny when I was working at home... I never stopped moving! BUT, the goal is to get some intentional exercise (gym, walk, bike, run, blade) over the next couple of days.
Without further ado - here are the images I promised:
The Mpls Farmers Market... fruit, vegetable, and flower stands...
Saturday night - Twins Game with Manfriend and another couple. It rained through the first two innings, but then cleared up and we had a fun night -- and the Twins won!
Sunday night - after going our separate ways for Father's Day, followed by my 3 hours of yard work, Manfriend and I had a spontaneous date night at a place called Pinstripes -- food was okay, nothing special, but the bar will be fun in the winter months... indoor bocce and bowling in a more upscale location than usual. This beautiful Sunday night, we enjoyed the outdoor fire pit while we talked and relaxed over a glass or two of wine... perfect way to end a fun weekend. Just us. Nobody else, no TV, no computers, no distractions.
This one is a little weird. I was driving to work this morning and drove past this site - I was at a stop light, and obviously the accident had happened hours earlier because there weren't and flashing lights or ambulances around, just 2 cops and a tow truck. Guess that business will be closed for a while... I hope nobody was hurt.
And last but certainly not least... and little motivation, courtesy of Nike and lifted from my friend Kelly.
It's a reminder that you DON'T get a hot body, healthy habits, or athletic prowess by sitting around THINKING about it, HOPING it will happen. One of my favorite book quotes is something like "You've got a wishbone where your backbone' sposed to be."
Like anything else in life, this takes work, discipline and effort.
After a couple of weeks of phoning it in, I'm glad to be back.

Friday Favorites!
Just a quick post, and a rather non-traditional variety of the Friday Favorites theme, but here goes!
First -- Friday Favorite is really a Thursday favorite. The Mpls Farmer's Market sets up shop on Nicollet Mall downtown every Thursday from 6 AM to 6 PM. Since my office happens to be ON Nicollet Mall, this is very convenient for me, and picking up a giant bounty of produce each Thursday is my new produce routine -- it is SO much cheaper than the grocery store, and I can tailor the amount that I buy and the variety, based on what looks good. I have contemplated doing a CSA / farm share, but 1) I don't wanna go pick it up, and 2) it is probably too much food for just me. So this is working out well. For 14 bucks, I came home with all of THIS (except the bananas):
Basil, strawberries, tomatoes, red bell peppers, bellow bell peppers cucumbers onions, grapes, and carrots.
Fourteen bucks!
Now I need to get cookin' -- anybody have a good recipe for carrot soup?
Next up -- as you may have read earlier this month, this is the year that I've been investing in some small things around the house that make a big difference. Last week I had an electrician here to do a few little things (he'll be back Monday to fix the garage electrical), most notably, installing a ceiling fan in my bedroom. This is a big deal MOSTLY because prior to this, I did not have an overhead light in the room, just a few lamps and then a weird lantern thing rigged to an outlet and hanging from a hook on the ceiling. It is a great fan - remote controlled which is wonderful when I'm cozy in bed and want to change the speed. I love it! And I'm already using the A/C less (although, it also hasn't exactly been that warm...):
And finally... oh, my poor little garage has been through so much. Those of you who know me "IRL" know what I'm talkin' about. But in addition to playing host to a crazy ex boyfriend and his ridiculous collection of car parts, my little garage door has NEVER really worked right -- recently I discovered that is because a previous owner wired the electrical, and didn't really do it up to code. This came to a head when I had some tree stumps ground out in the back yard, and the grinder cut through the wire. Sigh. But you know, it was just a matter of time before the electrical gave up the ghost anyway. However, there wasn't a service door on the garage, which meant that in order to get IN the garage and pull the pin, Manfriend and I had to break in through a window. Unfun. So I decided it was time to put a service door in the garage, and I can't tell you how happy this silly little door is making me! I came home to it yesterday -- and I had a lot of yard work to do last night, and it was just so nice to be able to walk in and out of a DOOR instead of the main garage lift-door. It's the little things, right?

It's Been A While...
Sorry for my recent silence - life has been insane. Also? Not much to talk about -- the weather hasn't really been cooperating with my need and desire to get back into an intense workout routine. Between my LA trip, a wedding, and a big pre-Father's Day dinner the other night, I have been eating like a savage. My work schedule has conspired against me, preventing my attendance at the last three WW@W meetings. The result of all this butt-sitting + eating-like-a-savage? I scale hopped today and it wasn't pretty -- like, pre-rejoining-WW-ugly. And God don't like ugly.
Although I had a wonderful time at the wedding we attended this past weekend (Manfriend's best friend was married; Manfriend was basically the best man, although there wasn't an official "best man"), we spent a busy but fun filled weekend laughing and loving - it was great to spend so much time with the bride and groom, as they live in NYC. Their friends were fun, the wedding was beautiful, and everybody was really happy. The best part, though, was staying in a nice hotel downtown -- not because I never stay in nice hotels, but because it dawned on me that I'd probably NEVER stayed in a hotel in downtown Minneapolis -- I mean, why would I? I've lived here my whole life, and for 11 years I've lived about a $15 cab ride away. When we woke up on Monday morning and ventured out in search of coffee and brunch, it was a day of "being a tourist in our own city." And then, of course, the New Yorkers all wanted to see the Mall of America. Which was a little less fun, but everybody always wants to see it, so we mall'd with the best of them.
Anyway, not a lot to talk about, just didn't want you all to think I'd disappeared.
Final thoughts?
What bother me about the Anthony Weiner "twexting" scandal is not the ethics involved (although that bothers me too), but the fact that he was stupid enough to do it. Are you really that stupid? It's ON THE INTERNET. Do you not know how the internet works??? Did it never OCCUR to you that somebody would find this? Or that one of your totally morally upright porn-star-turned-stripper-friends might turn your in? Really? These are our elected officials? Oy.

LA Story
Sara: What did you have in mind?
Harris: Well, I was thinking of taking you on a cultural tour of L.A.
Sara: That's the first fifteen minutes, then what?
Harris: All right, a cynic. First stop is six blocks from here.
Sara: Why don't we walk?
Harris: Walk? A walk in L.A*.?

Back from Los Angeles after a whirlwind couple of days -- cannot tell you how happy I was NOT to be in Mpls for the past few days. Record-breaking highs in the Twin Cities resulted in power outages, buckled roads, and general malaise throughout the city. I'm a notorious bitch really uncomfortable and unhappy in hot hot hot humidweather, so I am glad that I was safely tucked away in LA's perfectly blue sky and comfortable 72 degree weather.
I was traveling for business -- a commercial shoot -- and I cannot wait until July when I can reveal a bit more about it. For now, I'll take you on a little photo journey of my last few days. It is always hard to travel from MN to California -- the two hour time difference is hard to adjust to. I always end up waking at the crack of dawn my first day in Cali, and then staying up way too late upon my return. This trip was no exception -- and while I don't mind getting up early on my first day, today I'm really dragging, a result of having stayed up way too late last night.
First of all -- since my old company was HQ'd in California, I've probably made flights to LA and SFO around 25 times in the past 6 years... However, I had airline status then, and ALWAYS made sure to get an aisle seat, which means I basically stuck my nose in a book the whole time and paid absolutely no attention to the beauty below me. I had a window seat on Monday, and was shocked to look up to see these views.

How did I not notice this before?
When I landed, we checked in and went straight to the pre-production meeting. Afterwards, it was off for a little comp shopping in Venice. Gorgeous day, sweet little area, and lots of fun things to look at. It was a photographers dream and I took full advantage!
(Cake plate display in a window; Linus bikes lined up outside a store; old ginger ale bottle sign above a store)
After we got done exploring, it was time for dinner. People, if you've never been to The Little Door in LA, you should go there immediately, and you should have the scallops. I have eaten at a lot of good restaurants, and this one might be not only one of the most visually stunning, but also one of the best meals of my life. The company was amazing, the service was impeccable, and I just wanted to hang in out there forever.

(Seared scallops with a pistachio crust, served with beet puree, atop braised leeks).
And then, after an obligatory stop at the Coffee Bean, it was off to the set...
...and 14 hours later, we were done shooting. Our directors chairs were empty, and it was time for dinner.
We celebrated at Mozza, but honestly, we were so tired that I didn't enjoy it as much as I could / should have -- the food was delicious and the restaurant beautiful, but it didn't even come close to the night before. Plus, after fourteen hours on the set, being fed by craft service, none of us were very hungry.
(You know a project team is tired when 1) we only go through one bottle of wine between 9 people, and 2) we all decline dessert without even thinking about it).
As they say in the biz -- that's a wrap!
Off and running,
Although it was a wonderful beautiful trip, I'm glad to be back in little Minne. I brought the pretty weather with me -- it was a beautiful day here yesterday, and I sat on the patio way too late last night, re-adjusting to the time difference, catching up on email and life. I'm dragging a little bit today... but ready to get back to "reali life," which doesn't involve big restaurant meals, and food being hand-delivered to my chair every 30 minutes. Today is going to be cool - perhaps some rain, which will hopefully bring my sad little plants back to life. I gave them a big drink last night, but being neglected during 102 degree temps MIGHT have killed 'em.
Today is a busy day of meetings -- after which I'm pretty excited to head home and couch out for the remainder of the evening. If weather allows, I'll plan on a walk, but the most important goal is laundry, unpacking, and getting my life back in order.

As they say in the biz -- that's a wrap!

*One of the first times I was in LA for a shoot with my old company, I was talking about how great it was to be able to go outside without freezing -- I think it was February, so the trip to warmer pastures was very welcome. I made a comment to our executive producer along the lines of"Oh, my hotel is so close to the restaurant, I'll just walk and meet you there." She looked at my like I was nuts, and said "Honey. I'll pick you up. This is LA. Only hookers walk." Ha!

Seared Scallops With Skillet Sweet Corn
It was unbelievably warm all weekend -- but no humidity, so it was fantastic -- but by the time Sunday night rolled around, I wanted something simple, light, and tasty for dinner. I dug out a frozen bag of scallops from Trader Joe's, and remembered a recipe I'd been wanting to try with the two ears of sweet corn in my fridge. Since I knew I was leaving town on Monday morning, I also wanted to use up some things that I had on hand.
I recently bought a cast iron pan, and while I am having a tough time remembering not to grab the cast iron HANDLE, I LOVE the crust that appears when I sear things -- delicious!
I did not take a lot of "in process" pictures, but it is pretty self explanatory.
Ingredients:
Scallops
Canola or olive oil
Salt and pepper
Corn on the cob
Butter
Flour
Sugar
Salt
Pepper
Water
Salad fixings!
I'll let the link above explain the corn recipe -- note that I only used 2 ears of corn, which means that I also used less of the other ingredients, and it didn't take as long to cook. If you try to alter the recipe like I did, consider using more water than you think you need.
While the corn was simmering, I fixed up a small salad - nothing fancy - some sliced beets, goat cheese, cukes, and slivered almonds over mixed greens, topped with a drizzle of balsamic vinaigrette.
For the scallops -- I defrosted them, patted them try on a paper towel, and sprinkled with a little salt and pepper. I heated up some EVOO in the cast iron pan, on high, and placed the scallops in the oil -- I let them sizzle for one minute, then reduced the heat to medium and let them sit for about 4 minutes, before flipping them over and letting them cook another 3 minutes.
I plated, topped with the skillet corn, and served with a side salad and a lovely crisp glass of sauvignon blanc... a perfect summer meal.

My Week in Pictures
Friday night - a (large) bonfire with friends... after the humidity died down, so did the fire, and we sat around talking in the cool night air...
Saturday morning, I raced home from the Manfriend's house to meet my plumber, who repaired my revolting basement drain that was backing up... needless to say, I did not snap a picture of that, but early that afternoon -- brunch in Uptown -- Cafeteria rooftop with a dear college friend, in town from Chicago...
... then the Manfriend and I headed to Lifetime, where we lounged about in the lazy river, and I fell asleep, on a lounge chair in the sun -- but not before taking this picture of the perfect cloudless sky.
When we got home, the first of my plethora of peonies had popped, a beautiful pink.
~~~~~~~~~~
Today the weather was the same (read: perfect), and there was a lot of yard work -- trips to Home Depot and Menards, but despite feeling completely exhausted by 4 PM, I took some time to go walking and catch up with a dear girlfriend. We passed the Minnehaha Parkway bunny -- a bit of a S. Mpls mascot...... and one of the old fashioned drinking fountains that are found along the paths...
Tonight and tomorrow the weather will flip -- rain and humidity -- but I don't care - because I'm off to LaLaLand tomorrow morning for a commercial shoot, where I'm hoping to be able to take advantage of this, if only for my morning coffee:
I used to spend a ton of time in Los Angeles -- specifically West Hollywood -- when I was working for PRN. This will be the first time I've been back in two years, and I'm hoping to squeeze in a visit with some friends and take in the familiar sights and sounds...
Of course -- the part I'm most excited about? The work. The project is a cool one, my co-workers / travel companions absolutely rock, the director we've hired quite famous... and I'm excited for all the pictures I'll get to post when I'm back!
Off and running,
~Jessica
Editor's Note: Since he posted about it on his own Facebook page, I guess I can say it here: Manfriend is starting a new job tomorrow... it is a great opportunity, and I'm thrilled for him... so send some love into the universe that Day 1 is the best it can possibly be!
Jessi's Thai Kitchen
There is a great restaurant in Minneapolis called Chino Latino -- I think it opened in 2000, and it features "foods from the hot zone," whether they be asian or latino in flavor. The menu is filled with creative dishes with funny names -- but my favorite is Coconut Shrimp Curry.
I had a bag of frozen lobster bites from Trader Joe's on hand, and decided that it was time to use 'em up. I've been craving thai food / curry lately, so I decided to go (coco)nuts in the kitchen. Click here for the official recipe, but below you'll find the down and dirty 10 minute version:
The ingredients:
1 pint of lite coconut milk
1 cup of crushed pineapple
3 T of Red curry paste
1/4 cup Fish sauce (don't smell it; you've been warned)
1.5 T Sugar (not pictured)~~~~~~
Frozen shrimp (or lobster or scallops or whatever you want - or chicken even!) Fresh pineapple
Chopped red bell pepperChopped cilantro
Jasmine rice (Trader Joe's has some great 2-cup microwavable bags of jasmine rice, perfect for this recipe)It's so simple it is ridiculous. Mix the first 5 ingredients together in a large saute pan and bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes before adding the shrimp, pineapple, and red pepper.
...and pour the curry over it, topping with some fresh cilantro. You can also top with toasted coconut, but I didn't have any on hand so I skipped that step.
Serve and enjoy!
This serves 4-6, and reheats pretty well.
I'm not sure of the nuritional information because I haven't had time to figure it out yet.
Make sure you use LITE coconut milk.... honestly, I cannot tell the difference between lite and regular, but you'll save a boatload of fat and calories.
Morning Adventures
When I'm firing on all cylinders, I am a morning person.
I wake naturally, sometimes as early as 5 AM, and wake with energy. Lately I've been feeling pretty sluggish - not exactly sure why, but I think it has something to do with not going to bed early enough. I have been taking golf lessons, working late, working in the yard... and by the time I actually get inside my house at the end of a long day, I feel like I've not been home all day, and like I want to stay up way too late. So, I'm trying to break that habit, but it is HARD! Last night I made a great and significant step in doing this -- even though I stayed up until 11 PM (ideally, I'm falling asleep between 10 - 10:30), I made some really good choices.
Namely, even though it was gorgeous out, I did NOT sit on my patio and drink wine. Even though I had a few purchases to make at Menards / Home Depot, I chose to put it off -- none of it was urgent, and it would have resulted in an hour or two of work. I simply came home, met with a painter to get an estimate on painting the trim of my house, made a yummy dinner, got some exercise, and went to bed.
Also, when it was time to go to bed, I turned off my TV and shut off the lights - this might seem obvious, but sometimes I put the sleep timer on while I drift off to sleep to the sounds of Jay Leno. The last few nights I've just been turning it off, and I think I'm falling asleep faster.
This meant that this morning I woke naturally at 5:45.. before my alarm even went off. I got up, poured a cup of coffee, and threw on some running clothes... 60 minutes later, I'd burned about 400 calories, and had a really lovely, satisfying, rewarding morning.
I'm at home now -- waiting for an electrician and drinking a smoothie -- and reflecting on the morning and my goals for the month.
First off - I'm committing to an exercise goal of 900 minutes this month. That can be lifting, cardio, yoga, etc., but the bottom line is that 900 minutes is the equivalent of 30 minutes a day, every day, and there's just absolutely no reason on EARTH I can't achieve that goal. If I skip a day, I can do 60 minutes the next, but the goal is to get myself moving, even just a little bit, when I really don't wanna.
Second -- I had two fun encounters during this morning's walk. A super cute 6 WEEK old puppy named Gunner, who I wanted to scoop up and take home with me. He got away from his owner and scampered over to me, and I nearly cried he was so adorable. It was 5 minutes of pure puppy bliss: licks, nibbles, and jumps, and I fell in love. Pointer / Border Collie mix. Gunner, you've stolen my heart.
The second encounter was a little less cute, but I'm pretty sure she wanted to kiss me too -- while walking along my path this morning, I spotted a set of keys! Obviously somebody had dropped them. There wasn't a soul around, and I wasn't sure what to do, so I put them on a nearby picnic table.... I stayed aware of the people I was passing, and sure enough, a woman came by on a bike who had jogged past me earlier... I pulled my ear phones out and approached her, and as I was starting to ask if she'd LOST keys, she asked me if I had SEEN keys. VICTORY! I was able to tell her roughly where they were... probably 20 minutes had passed since I saw the keys, so I hope she was able to find them.
Once I got home, I immediately made a smoothie and started pulling out some stuff for lunch... and prepping dinner. I will be working very late tonight, as we have to finalize the casting for a commercial we'll shoot next week in LA, so I want to walk through the door and be able to eat without futzing around with it. I'm sensing my golf lesson will be canceled due to rain, but even if it isn't canceled, I'm unable to attend.
Time to stretch, hit the shower, and hit the road.
Off and running,
~Jessica
