A Day in the Life
I feel like my days don't start in the morning, they start at night.
Feed, change, play... dinner, dishes... feed, change, play... by the time he goes to bed (between 8 and 9 PM), I've usually gotten a head start on the morning routine. Then I collapse on the sofa, watching mindless TV and cruising the internet, telling myself over and over again to go to bed, there's nothing gained by staying awake at that point... but I just need to unwind.
Sometimes he sleeps until 6 AM -- sometimes just until 4 AM. Either way, he's a pretty good sleeper, all things considered, so no complaints here. But I do wish he'd pick a wake-up time and stick to it, so that I could get routine about planning our day.
This morning he woke up at 4:16 AM. And by 5:02, I'd fed, changed, and re-clothed him (his diaper leaked all over his clothing), and rocked him back to sleep. I was going to have to get up at 5:45 or 6 in order to get to work on time, so I just stayed up.
(I know that sounds insane).
But last night I'd done such a good job of prep (filled the morning's coffee maker, bottles, smoothie prep, packed a lunch, prepped dinner in the crockpot), I really wanted exercise to be the cherry on the supermom sundae.
So I crept down to the basement, threw on some workout clothes, and hit the treadmill. It was just a quick 30 minute session, but it felt AMAZING. I broke a sweat, though that might be more about the intense heat and humidity this week than anything else. It wasn't intense, but it was highly enjoyable -- and it turns out MTV plays actual music videos at 5:15 AM, so I didn't need programming or music, just flipped on the TV.
30 minutes of running / walking, and then a quick 15 minutes of arms on the BOSU and balance ball, followed by some stretching.
Oh, the stretching. I swear every joint in my back cracked as I rolled over my beloved foam roller.
Then -- I hit start on the coffee maker, en route to the shower. Showered, made smoothie, blew out hair while drinking (smoothie, not vodka, though it was tempting to add some), dressed, quick application of lip gloss and mascara and jewelry, quick flat-iron and spray of the hair... woke up baby, changed him, and away we go... drop off, small talk, and on the road by 7:15, at my desk at 7:45.
I'll be exhausted and worthless by 2 PM, but at least when I walk in the door after work, dinner will be done, I can go on auto-pilot and it will start all over again. Tomorrow, it would be great if he slept until 6. :-)
Off and running,
